Each time I visit LA, I like to try new restaurants. A few months ago, I convinced my friend to eat at Pizzana…a fantastic pizza restaurant! They use ingredients straight from Italy!
I had to order my favorite dish from Rome in pizza form…the Cacio E Pepe pizza. It was AMAZING! My friend, who was much more adventurous, tried the Diavola…aka Devil pizza.
Let’s just say…we both chose well!
This is my re-creation of her pizza. Not exactly the same…still spectacularly delicious!
I can’t recall everything, but the highlights included spicy meats, a honey drizzle, and walnuts in the sauce. I wanted to use hot ham, but I could not find any at the grocery store. Instead, I used hot Italian sausage. Then, I used a mild salami, but it would also be great with a little more heat!
I had a leftover GF pizza dough mix that I needed to use, but you can use your favorite crust- from scratch or the refrigerated section!
It’s hard to capture all of the elements in one picture…but trust me- it’s all there!

GF Hot & Sweet Diavola Pizza
Ingredients
- 1/3 - 1/2 lb. hot sausage (or thinly sliced hot ham)
- 1 pizza crust (mine was gluten free, but I did add Parmesan cheese and dried oregano)
- 2 oz. light cream cheese, softened
- 1 Tbsp. butter, softened
- 2 Tbsp. walnuts, finely chopped
- 1/2 tsp. dried oregano
- 1-2 tsp. Parmesan cheese
- 1/4 tsp. dried basil
- 1 c. mozzarella cheese, shredded
- 5-8 thin slices of salami
- 2-3 Tbsp. Parmesan cheese
- 2-3 tsp. honey
- 4-6 basil leaves, chopped
- Optional: Garnish with additional chopped walnuts
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. In a medium skillet, brown the sausage. If needed, pre-bake the pizza crust.
- In a small bowl, mix the cream cheese, butter, walnuts, dried oregano, Parmesan cheese, dried basil, salt, and pepper. Spread in a thin layer over the crust. Next, sprinkle half of the mozzarella cheese over the white sauce. Then, top with the sausage and salami. Sprinkle with the remaining mozzarella cheese. Bake for 6-8 minutes. Remove from the oven and add Parmesan cheese, additional chopped walnuts, and drizzle with the honey. Return to the oven for 2-3 minutes. Garnish with chopped basil.
